Mill City, Nevada

We spent the week of October 7-14 in Mill City with friends from the Escapees "Birds of a Feather" (BOF) group of the Prospectors and Metal Detectors(PMD). John and Peggy have been living in their RV for a significant number of years and have just purchased a home here. We had the privilege of helping them with painting in this kitchen as they prepare to move into their home soon.
Both Peggy & John are experts at metal detecting and led us up into the Humbolt Mountain Range where Joanne was instructed in the search for gold nuggets by their friend Dick.
After three whole years of Joanne never finding a nugget, this week changed history! First of all, Dick dug down to bedrock. He then coaxed Joanne along as she metal detected to find the first three nuggets. Another day John gave additional instruction especially in ground balancing the metal detector and Peggy demonstrated specific procedures on determining what's a hot rock versus gold! Thanks to all three of these friends, Joanne finally found two more nuggets on her own. Wheeee!!!! (Thanks to John for his photographic expertise and sharing the photo below.)
We took a ride on Saturday visiting the backside of the Humbolt range. This area was once the location of the Star Mining District's rich silver ore mines. The boom years were 1864-65. Today there are only a few relics and visible mine tailings. We also went to the historic town of Unionville and drove along the Rye Patch Reservoir. There is truly lots of history in Nevada in these mountains and valleys!
