Ending March 2010
We are now moved into our new house and ready for a day sight-seeing! We had always heard about Ajo so today was a beautiful (90 degrees out) day to take a spin. From Gila Bend we drove south on 85 to the quaint little town...understand this town is home mostly to retirees and the Border Patrol.
The open pit copper mine of yester-year in Ajo obviously employed many a worker during the past century. Can you imagine how much material was removed from this pit?
From Ajo we headed south to within a couple miles of Lukeville, which is the border crossing into Mexico. Organ Pipe National Monument is located in this area. The visitor center has a fascinating educational program to inform us of the geology, the flora, the history, and the culture of this region.
One of the greatest treats was nature's display of spring wild flowers along the route back to our home. From the yellows to blues to oranges to purples the blossoms were abundant!
