South East Louisiana - Kinder
We've spent the week in the SE part of the state at a well managed RV Resort. Today we took a day trip down to the gulf to again view the devastation of a hurricane....this time Rita. We went through Cameron, Holly Beach and back to Lake Charles, LA.
In one location just south of Lake Charles there were probably 1000 FEMA houses, many of which were still inhabited.

Shortly thereafter when we arrived in Cameron we could see why the houses were needed. This is one of the few standing buildings...a gutted out church.

Primarily we saw concrete slabs on which there use to be homes. Some had concrete steps and nothing else left.

The oil rigs in the gulf are fascinating to us. We think these are new storage tanks that are being constructed just south of Lake Charles.

The evidence of this industry is in view at every turn in the road. We saw many ads for workers. The transportation companies providing helicopter service out to the oil rigs are also abundant.

The trailers you saw are the biggest FEMA trailer park in the area, it is called Crying Eagle Park from the Indian meaning of the name of the Parish it resides in, Calcasieu. Also, the tanks you saw being constructed on Hwy 27 south of sulphur and just north and west of cameron are actually LNG holding tanks. They are building a new facility to unload and house the LNG (liquified natural gas) before it is shipped off via pipeline. Once completed, this area will boast one of the largest processors of LNG. That plant is #2 of 3 plants. One has been around for quite some time and the 3rd has not started construction.
So are you still staying in the area or are you moving on to other destinations?
Hi Andy! Thanks for the information. We needed your "tour guide" information as we traveled along. As you can see from our next post, we've left LA and are now in TX as we head west.
